First edition of one of the emblematic works of the Portuguese Expansion, by the humanist, poet and historian Manuel de Faria e Sousa (1590-1649), a native of Felgueiras. The copy includes the following 19 separate engravings (those in the first volume are intaglio, the others are xilographies). Volume I: Saint Helena, Cochin, Kilwa, Cannanore, Sofala, Goa, Malacca, Hormuz, Chaul, Bassein and Diu. Volume II: Mozambique Island, Daman, Manar, Mangalor, Onor and Bargalor. Volume III: Muscat and Macau. The collation of each volume is as follows: I - [32], 396, [42] p; volume II - [8], 968, [2] p. III - [8 (i.e., 6)], 564, [6] p. The three volumes also feature three engraved frontispieces and numerous intaglio and xilographies, integrated into the text, depicting viceroys and other historical figures. The third volume, lacking the last preliminary sheet (+4), includes the rare final errata sheet that is sometimes missing. A somewhat worn copy, with some acid stains and other minor imperfections that are difficult to distinguish. However, it retains all 19 engravings of Portuguese strongholds, as well as the three engraved allegorical frontispieces (worn, with some old ownerships scratched on all three volumes).
