DC. XLI. [1641].- [24, 2], 120, 48, 34, [2 br.] p.: 1 gravura; 36 cm.- E Latin edition of the «Allegações de Direito que se offereceram ao [...] Rei D. Henrique por parte da Sª. Dona Catherina, sua sobrinha filha do Iffante dom Duarte seu irmão a 22 de Outubro de 1579», printed in Almeirim the following year by Antonio Ribeiro and Francisco Correa. Latin translation, published in Paris by Friar Francisco de Santo Agostinho de Macedo, OFM (1596-1681), a seventeenth-century figure of great intellectual stature, a truly encyclopedic man, in the words of Barbosa Machado (II, p. 90), who distinguished himself not only as a polymath but also as a diplomat and humanist. The edition, dedicated to Cardinal Richelieu, includes an appendix relating to the ascension to the throne of King D. João IV of Portugal and his legitimacy as King. The copy presents, at the end of the dedication signed by Friar Francisco, the following handwritten annotation from the time: “He o gr[an]de Pe. Macedo o qual faz menção deste panegyrico no seu Proemio propanegyrico in Laudem Bracharensis Archiepiscopi D. Ludovice de Sousa [...]”. Before the last preliminary page, it includes an intaglio engraving with a genealogical tree of King D. Manuel I of Portugal, apparently identical (and from the same matrix) to that which illustrates the 1580 edition. Copy with some browning preserving good margins. Ex-libris of Aníbal Fernandes Thomaz (lot no. 4646 of the catalogue of the auction held in 1912). Contemporary binding, entirely of rigid parchment. Barbosa Machado, I, p. 40. Ameal, 2151.
