16th century edition of a mystical text by Fr. Serafino da Fermo (ca. 1490-1540), theologian and preacher, born in Fermo (Marcas), canon regular of Lateran, disseminator of the doctrines of the Dominican Battista Carioni da Crema (†1534) , who would be condemned by the Inquisition in 1552. The first text (208 p.) is titled “Libro de la conversion del sinner al amor de Dios...”; the second (280 p.), “Espejo del alma”. Copy slightly cropped, but clean. Interesting contemporary binding, worn and with imperfections (but recoverable), with b.ind tooling on the covers and lack of fixed endpapers and ties. Anselmo, 284. The Dominican Fr. Diogo do Rosário, born in Évora, was prior in the convent of Guimarães, the city where he died in 1580. Fr. Diogo Diogo had a close relationship with D. Fr. Bartolomeu dos Mártires who commissioned him to publish a new legendarium (Braga, 1567) which was reprinted several times, as well as the translation of the “Summa Caietana”, by the Dominican exegete, theologian and Italian cardinal Tommaso de Vio (1469-1534). In fact, at least six Portuguese editions of the Rosarian translation of the “Summa” are known (Lisbon, 1557, 1560; Coimbra, 1566 and 1573; Braga, 1565 and 1566), the present one being probably one of the rarest, since there is no copy in the National Library or in the Biblioteca de D. Manuel II. Copy slightly cropped, with some restorations on the title page, slightly affecting the text on front and verso; Minor restorations on subsequent leaves. 16th century Venetian edition of some of the most important texts by one of the great Doctors of the Church. Saint Bernard (1090-1153), reformer of the Cistercian Order, canonized in 1174 by Pope Alexander III, founded in 1115 the Abbey of Claraval, mother house of around 350 monasteries spread across Europe, including Alcobaça. It contains ancient manuscripts, in both volumes: Cœnobijj Costensis vsu[m] vero obtinet Frater Antonii Rebellus; Br. Diogo de Brandão. Title page of the first volume with some stains and wormholes, without affecting the text. Contemporarry bindings (?), full sheepskin, with blind decoration on the covers and new (reconstructed) spines, retaining the four metal clasps (a loose strap). Carmine edges with the abbreviated author's name inscribed in large capitals on the front edge.

Illustrated edition with 28 intaglio portraits (2 multiples and 1 double), the first (Mary Queen of Scots) burin engraved and the others in mezzotint. Of particular note is the beautiful portrait (page 43) of Catherine of Portugal, Queen of England, by marriage to Charles II (page 37); portrait with the following inscription: I. Haysmans pinx. — I. Smith ex:. The gallery includes all the monarchs of Great Britain and other figures from the court and the Anglican Church, namely William Drummond, Sir Robert Clayton, Sir Peter Lely, Henry Compton, Thomas Sprat, etc. John Boydell (1720-1804), a highly successful publisher and engraver, was also Sheriff and Lord Mayor of London in 1790. Copy with slight browning, complete with all prints, according to the index. With the exception of the first portrait (frontispiece), which is slightly trimmed, all the others retain good margins, in addition to the crease from the printing plates. Half-binding in red morocco leather, from the 20th century, with gold closed panels on the spine.

This monumental work can be considered a general history of the Kingdom, given the wide variety of information it contains. The Proofs section is also undeniably interesting, as it notably transcribes some documents that have since disappeared. The copy corresponds exactly to the description given by Inocêncio, namely: the first 12 volumes of the History are bound in 13; followed by the six volumes of Proofs and the volume of Index. The first volume includes a portrait of the author. The fourth volume contains engravings of royal seals, medals, and coins minted in Portugal since the beginning of the monarchy. None of the volumes includes the usual engraved frontispiece characteristic of the Academy. An old ownership mark (monogram) is present on all volumes. The copy is very clean, preserving large margins. The contemporary bindings, full sheepskin, those of the first two volumes with blind decoration on the covers, the others without decoration, only with the original patina. Samodães, 3241. First of the three known works that came out of the press of Belchior Rodrigues (fl. 1588-1590), which António Joaquim Anselmo rightly considers to be a single typographic copy. On the last page, in fact, we find a collective colophon for the three titles. Slightly trimmed copy, with slight browning and light moisture stains (from the tide). Restorations on the lower margin of the title page, on pages Aa5, Aa6 and on the lower outer corner of the last page; traces of wormholes; occasional marginal notes of the time. Ex-libris by Victor d’Avila Perez (lot no. 1905 from the auction held in 1939/40). Friar Diogo de São Miguel (1505-1576), hermit of Saint Augustine, was born in Castelo Branco and died in Penafirme; He was rector of his order's college in Coimbra and twice elected provincial. Includes the following information on the title page: Vendese á porta da See, em casa de Christouam lopez Liureyro, a dous tostões em papel. On the verso of the last sheet, the printer's mark. Copy slightly cropped, with restorations and stains, on the first eight pages (rarely affecting the printed part). Casa de Azevedo stamp on the first page of the text (lot nº 3096 from the auction held in 1921-1922, acquired for 1,000 Rs. by Victor Perez). Ex-libris by Victor d’Avila Perez (lot nº 7070 from the auction held in 1940). Inocêncio (II, p. 166) informs: It is a very rare book of which I only saw a copy at Bib. National. The Jesuit Jean Crasset (1618-1692), a French theologian and ascetic writer born in Dieppe, published his "Histoire de l’Église du Japon" in Paris in 1689; although considered controversial, the work was soon translated and had three editions in the first half of the 18th century, in addition to the Portuguese edition. The collation of the three volumes is as follows: I - [40], 642 p.: 1 unfolded map, 4 [i.e. 3] unfolded engravings; II - [12], 560 p.; III - [11, 1 br.], 643, [1 br.] p.: 1 unfolded engraving [missing]. The third volume was printed at the Miguel Soares Workshop and includes a small engraving of a tomb, on the front of sheet F8 (p. 95). First and only Portuguese translation by D. Maria Antonia de S. Boaventura e Menezes (fl. 1750), illustrated with a fold-out map of Japan and four fold-out engravings in the first volume (of which the present copy only retains three) and another (martyrdom of missionaries) in the third (missing from the present copy); the second volume does not include any engravings. The map and engravings are by Michel Le Bouteux (Ernesto Soares, p. 136 r ff.). Old inscription on the three title pages: Ex libris Congregationis Missionis [illegible] Crucis Vimaranensis. Copy slightly trimmed, with the following imperfections: in the first volume, leaf C4 (p. 39/40) with frayed outer margin and a small chip on the outer margin of leaf C5; small stain on the outer margin of the first 30 leaves. Father Rougemont (1624-1676), Jesuit, born in Maestricht, accompanied Father Prospero Intorcetta (1626-1696) on his trip to China. Upon arriving in Nanjing in 1659, he was taken prisoner and, in 1664, taken to Guangzhou, having written the present narrative in captivity. Rougemont died in Chian-Chow, in 1676. First and only edition of the Portuguese translation, published without the name of the translator, the Jesuit Sebastião de Magalhães (1635-1709), rector of the Santo Antão Jesuit College, in Lisbon, and confessor from D. Pedro II, who added a letter from Father Gabriel de Magalhães (written from Beijing) and another from Father Bartolomeu de Espinoza (written from Macau). It describes, above all, the Chinese attacks on Christian missions in the year 1660, being considered an important source for the history of missions in China. A slightly cropped specimen (carminate edges), with slight browning and occasional smaller spots. Faded old ownership on the title page. Ex-libris by Victor d’Avila Perez (lot nº 6715 from the auction held in 1940). 20th century binding, with old-fashioned patina and gold decoration on the spine. Inocêncio, VII, p. 218. This set comprises four volumes, each containing a total of 432 intaglio engravings (96 per volume in the first three French volumes and 144 in the fourth), hand-coloured, exclusively depicting birds and other bird species, by the engraver François-Nicolas Martinet (1731-1800), probably originating from the work *Ornithologia sive synopsis methodica...*, by the naturalist Mathurin-Jacques Brisson (1723-1806), published between 1760 and 1763 in Paris and Leiden. The engravings are numbered, with the following distribution by volume: I - 577 to 672; II – 673 to 768; III – 769 to 864; IV - 865 to 1008. Engraving 699 has rough tears and restorations; prints show slight moisture stains, mainly marginal, but are generally clean and have good margins. Ex-libris of Victor d’Avila Perez in all four volumes. Bindings very damaged (no value).

Fr. Jerónimo de Azambuja (†1563), also known as Oleastro, religious of the Order of Saint Dominic, of which he was provincial, was one of the most prominent theologians of the 16th century. Deep knowledge of the Latin and Greek languages, he participated in the Council of Trent where he was noted for his opposition to any type of innovation; as chief inquisitor (1555) he practiced the greatest violence and cruelty. Original edition of his main work, the “Comentários ao Pentateuco”, divided into five parts or books, the first printed by João Barreira and the rest by João Blávio de Colónia. The commentary on the second book of the Pentateuch was the first to be printed by João Blávio de Colónia (fl. 1554-1563), the last German printer to settle in Lisbon. Copy slightly trimmed (occasional damage to the printed marginalia), with slight moisture stains (from the tide), but overall clean. Full sheepskin binding, from the 20th century, certainly from the workshop of Mestre Império Graça, with blind decoration on the covers, in the style of the period (spine with slight wear). Devotional work attributed by the bibliography to D. Jorge da Silva (†1578), nobleman and State councilor who accompanied King D. Sebastião I on the tragic journey to Africa. In the preface (2nd and 3rd preliminary pages), the printer Martim de Burgos, states: “This liuro, deuoto Lector, I print in this city Deuora meu Pay que[que] Deos aja, per duas veses & toda a copia dos liuros se dispe[n]deo muito depressa...”, so this is the third edition, the first two having been printed by André de Burgos, also in Évora, in 1571(?) and 1574 respectively (Anselmo, 379 & 409). Edition mainly composed in round characters, with some epigraphs and current titles in Gothic. Cropped copy, with slight browning and occasional minor stains; title page a little shorter; carmine edges, with excess ink sometimes staining some margins. 20th century full sheepskin binding. Second edition of a work of the greatest importance for the history of the Holy Places and their religious monuments. The Franciscan Bernardino Amico, born in Gallipoli (fl. 1590-1610), traveled through the Holy Land at the end of the 16th century, having been prior of his order in Jerusalem between 1593 and 1597(?). During his stay he collected numerous notes and drawings from life, including facades and plans of some now-vanished buildings. Back in Italy, he published the work, first in 1609, with engravings by Antonio Tempesta, nine prints less than in the present edition, illustrated with 33 double engravings, by the famous French engraver Jacques Callot, including an engraved frontispiece and a view of Jerusalem, according to the original by Antonio de Angelis (1578). The work is dedicated to Cosimo II, of Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, who commissioned the engravings from Callot, expressly for this second edition. The volume presents irregular and incomprehensible pagination, which is why we present the detailed and rigorous collation below: [1], ¶4, A2, B1, C-F2, G1, H-L2, M1, N-R2, S1, T-V2, X1, Y-Z2, Aa-Cc2, Dd1, Ee-Qq2, Rr1, Ss-Vv2. The edition presents the engravings interspersed in successive printing and only afterwards was the respective descriptive text added. It was then necessary to add additional folios, when the remaining space proved to be insufficient for the text that needed to be printed, which explains the irregularity of the sections. On the verso of the last folio, the following colophon: In Firenze, M.DC.XIX. per il Cecconcelli. [mark of the pinter] Alle Stelle Medicee. Con Licenzia dé Superiori. All folios are found mounted in guards. Lightly cropped copy, with light handling and occasional stains. Some tears without lack of support, particularly in the folds of the engravings (and on the margin of f. O1). Ex-libris by Victor d’Avila Perez (not found in the auction catalogue held in 1940). Contemporarry binding, fully of rigid parchment, slightly worn and with some damage to the spine (recoverable). Amico's drawings were the first accurate images that reached the West, of some of the places of greatest religious significance in the Holy Land, namely the building of the Last Supper, the Way of the Cross and the Holy Sepulcher. Third edition of a work originally published in 1590, with a second edition in 1598. Cesare Vecellio (ca. 1521-1601), Italian painter and draftsman, born in Cadore (Veneto), was a cousin and compatriot of the great Titian, with whom he was a companion and probably an assistant in his workshop. The edition is illustrated in the text with 415 xylographic figures, accompanied by small captions, representing the costumes of European, Asian, African, Ottoman, and New World peoples. The work enjoyed considerable success and contributed to the formation of the imaginary representation that Europeans developed of the peoples of the then-known world. A large volume, entirely handwritten and calligraphed, certainly intended to be written upright on its own stand, with the following instructions on the title page: Diario para escripturação do Contrato Geral do Tabaco. N’este Reyno, Ilhas adjacentes e Macau, sublocado ao Conde do Farrobo pelos sócios abaixo mencionados, perante o Tribunal do Thesouro Publico em 27 de Agosto de 1834, pelo tempo de três annos, que deviam começar no primeiro de Janeiro de 1833 e acabar no último de Dezembro de 1836...”. The original contract was signed by José Ferreira Pinto Basto (on his own behalf and as attorney for the other partners) at the aforementioned Court on September 30, 1833. In the lower third of the title page is the list of the 16 partners who agreed to the sublease: José Ferreira Pinto Basto, José Ferreira Pinto Junior, Duarte Ferreira Pinto, Teodoro Ferreira Pinto, José Teixeira Pinto, Jerónimo José de Faria, Custódio Teixeira Pinto, António Ferreira Pinto Basto, João Ferreira Pinto, Lino Silveira, Luís Ferreira de Sampaio, Diogo Carlos Duff, Gerardo Gould, Guilherme Newman Roope, Guilherme de Roure e Manuel Joaquim Pimenta. The volume includes 1210 articles, the first dated September 30, 1833, and the last [illegible: after 21] April 1836. At the end, the indication: Article No. 1211 follows in the B Journal on p. 511, implying that there was at least one more volume with the continuation of this one. The 510 pages were entirely written on lined paper, with 50 lines and several columns manually ruled. The volume has a growing stain in the upper third of the last 30 pages, worsening towards the end and hindering readability in the header and first lines of the last 20 pages. A document of great importance for the economic and social history of the first half of the 19th century, not referenced in the bibliography and academic documentation consulted. Alexandre Herculano de Carvalho e Araújo, writer, historian, journalist, and intellectual, born in Lisbon, a major figure of Portuguese Romanticism. An undated autograph letter (circa 1870?) addressed to the poet Eduardo Augusto Vidal (1841-1907), journalist, playwright, and Romantic poet, also born in Lisbon. In his bitter phase, Herculano complains about supposed friends who have distanced themselves, turning... to those who could be more useful to them than I. The letter was published by Andrée Crabbé Rocha in the volume *A epistolografia em Portugal* (Coimbra, 1965, pp. 277-278), signed Herculano.

Extensive handwritten letter, undated, addressed to António de Azevedo Castelo Branco, communicating his difficult decision to return to the islands with the “only solution,” without even informing his closest friends, ... because I feared that the affectionate cry (underlined in the original) of such friendly hearts would shake a determination that I only hold secure in my head, but which is very weak in my heart and constantly crumbling. It is worth remembering that, after several stays in Lisbon and Porto and a trip to North America (1869), Antero returned definitively to Ponta Delgada in 1891, where he would commit suicide on September 11 of the same year. The letter is slightly handled, with some weakened amendments and folds, but entirely legible, signed Anthero.

Original edition of one of the author's rarest titles, illustrated with his self-portrait. It transcribes one of the lectures that most impressed Fernando Pessoa, who chose to inaugurate his publishing house Olisipo with this very text. Untrimmed copy, with very slight foxing, but generally clean, preserving both paperback covers, with slight wear and the flaps intact. It is worth noting that the covers enclose the first and last pages. Full sheepskin binding, signed Fersil - Porto, with gold inscrption on the front cover, ornamental borders on the covers, closed panels on the spine and roll on the squares.

Ten extensive, apparently unpublished, handwritten letters addressed to Raúl Leal (1886-1964), writer, occultist, and poet, born in Lisbon, contributor to the magazine Orpheu, one of the introducers of Futurism in Portugal; his book "Sodoma divinizada" (1923) was one of three editions published by Fernando Pessoa's Olisipo publishing house that sparked the controversy between February and May 1923, involving, on one side, himself and Fernando Pessoa, and on the other, the Lisbon Students' Action League, led by Pedro Teotónio Pereira, with the support of the Catholic Church's newspaper "A Época". The letters are dated between January 1928 and February 1931 (one undated), addressing literary matters, notably Raúl Leal's collaboration with the magazine Presença (three on Presença letterhead). Letters signed by José Régio, retaining their respective envelopes.
