With the exception of plates 4, 11 and 12, which are full-page, all the others are fold-out. The engravings are, in general, very clean and well folded; only the engravings of the monument (6), the high altar (10) and the candelabrum (17) show some restorations, especially in the folds, visible only on the verso; engravings 13 to 17 with minor restorations on the inner margin; small wormholes on the upper margin of leaves Ss3 to Vv3 (8 leaves), marginally affecting four engravings. Otherwise, a very clean and complete copy. Contemporary binding, entirely of flexible parchment, missing the ties and with browning on the first double endpaper. Palau, 376974.

Fr. João Soares (1507-1572), born in Urrô (Penafiel), was a hermit of Saint Augustine and participated in the third session of the Council of Trent (1561/63); he was confessor of King D. João III and bishop of Coimbra between 1545 and the year of his death. He left us the constitutions of his diocese (Coimbra, 1548) and an extensive bibliography on religious themes, namely commentaries on the Gospels of Matthew, Luke and Mark. In 1548 he was responsible for publishing the new “Constitutions” of his bishopric. Second edition, with the royal privilege occupying the front of the second folio. The first edition (Anselmo, 158), in addition to other differences, presents the privilege on the verso of the first folio. On the back of the last sheet (missing in the BNP copy) there is a colophon dated October 1561. Copy, cropped, with ablation of the last line of the imprint (with the date), on the title page. Otherwise, a very clean and complete copy. Full sheepskin binding, from the 17th century(?) with mottled patina, preserving the original endpapers intact, on plain paper. Anselmo, 164. Biblioteca Nacional (16th century), 855. Biblioteca de D. Manuel II only refers to the 1566 edition. Reiss & Auvermann (Auction 40), 1803 (the same copy, with the mistaken cataloging as being from the first edition) .

Duarte Nunes (1530-1608), a learned historian, law graduate, chronicler, and judge of the Court of Appeals, after the death of D. Henrique, the Cardinal-King, warmly embraced the cause of D. Filipe I, whose right to succession he defended in writing against those who challenged it. This is an important 16th-century type of printing, produced by João Blávio de Colónia, a German printer who worked in Lisbon between 1554 and 1563, having produced more than 50 types of printing works. The two preliminary sheets include: a title page, with a framed architectural xylographic frame; on the verso, a royal charter dated October 2, 1559; followed by the dedication MVITO ILLVSTRE SENHOR (to D. Francisco Coutinho, Count of Redondo); on the verso, a small block of 14 lines AOS LECTORES, with instructions on the organization of the work. Slightly trimmed copy (carmine top edges), but very clean and solid; title page slightly shorter at the outer margin. 20th-century binding, with leather spine, with some damage to the turn ins. Second edition, identical to the first published in 1670, of an important treatise on military art whose author (fl. 1670) is only known to have been a native of Brescia. The work is composed of 33 chapters on the use of the lance (with 17 engravings, 16 of which are double), 20 on the use of the musket (10 double engravings), 28 on infantry tactics (28 engravings) and 9 on the disposition of troops in battle (9 engravings). The work, dedicated to Ferdinand Maria of Bavaria (1636-1679), is illustrated with his portrait, along with the allegorical frontispiece and a remarkable set of 64 intaglio engravings with discontinuous numbering (1-17, 21-30, 33-46, 48-61, 64, 66, 68, 70, 72, 74, 77, 79, 81), most of which were printed separately. A clean copy, with some minor imperfections, namely: the first two engravings are slightly handled and restored, with minor damage to the lower outer corner of the title page; some marginal restorations on the first six pages of text. Otherwise, a clean and complete copy, with all engravings remaining very fresh and with good margins. Full parchment binding, not contemporary, with new endpapers.

Rare translation of one of the best-known works by a scholar born in Spalato (1450-1524), in Dalmatia (today Split, Croatia), who lived the last years of his life in isolation to dedicate himself to the study of Theology. It is also an important 16th century Portuguese species, with an interesting xilo-typographic arrangement on the title page, of which there are two variants (see BN, 495/496). The present copy appears, however, to be a mix of both, as it has the last page numbered 295 and a single section c. Copy a little cropped and handled; old scratched ownership and small ink stain on title page; last page with rough restoration on the verso, slightly affecting the text (on the recto) and several inscriptions and scribbles on the verso. 17th century (?), full sheepskin binding, with some damage to the spine, but recoverable. Anselmo, 513. Samodães, 1792. Biblioteca Nacional (16th Century), 495/496. Biblioteca of D. Manuel II, 165.

[ORDEM DE NOSSA SENHORA DO CARMO].- Compendio das Chronicas da Orde[m] de Nossa Senhora do Carmo. 1572.
This is the only published part of the four that the author is believed to have left in manuscript. The compiler, Father Simão Coelho (1514-1606), studied at the Universities of Salamanca and Siena; he was prior of the convents of Moura and Lisbon, eventually becoming provincial of the Order. Father Balbino Velasco Bayon, in his History of the Carmelite Order in Portugal (Lisbon, Paulinas, 2001), states that this is the first printed work concerning the history of the Carmelite Order, a book of great erudition and a true bibliographic rarity. The edition features a frontispiece with four xylographic stripes, framing an extensive summary of the work, with the title printed on a cartouche in the upper stripe. This is followed by a full-page xylographic engraving with a blank verso, representing the coat of arms of the Order. Working copy, but complete, heavily trimmed, with severe burns (repaired) on the upper outer corners of the entire volume, occasionally affecting the typographical area, particularly on the title page. Stamp of the Azevedo House on the engraving (lot no. 787 of the auction held in 1921/22) and ex-libris of Victor d’Avila Perez (lot no. 1815 of the auction held in 1939/40); both descriptions already include the defects briefly described. 19th-century binding, full sheepskin, with imperfections in the covers and spine. Inocêncio, VII, p. 275 (I knew of only three copies, but apparently I was unaware of the engraving since he does not mention it). Anselmo, 695. National Library (16th Century), 541. Biblioteca de D. Manuel II, 320.

The work is composed of two parts which, although with their own title pages, present independent leafing. It includes the following illustrations intaglio engraved by the editor, painter and engraver Pierre Daret (1604-1678): two Venetian titles, an allegory (La vertu au Roy), a portrait of the author (in medallion), another allegory (before the preface), 103 emblematic figures (repeating the illustrations of Otto van Veen's Emblemata Oratiana, from 1607), each of which is accompanied by two poems (in Latin and vernacular) and the respective explanatory text on the opposite page. It also includes several decorative elements alongside the text: four large vignettes, two identical engravings at the end of each part, and several initial capitals, also intaglio engraved. The copy is somewhat handled, with several imperfections, notably some browning and occasional stains. The binding is not contemporary, with a leather spine and slight wear. Tchémerzine p. 454. The group of 16 leaves includes the «Repertorio das materias que se conteem nas seis partes das leis extravagantes» (Repertory of matters contained in the six parts of the extravagant laws) followed, at the end of the volume, by a booklet with «Annotações sobre as ordenações dos cinqvo livros, que pelas leis extrauagantes são revogadas ou interpretadas» (Annotations on the ordinances of the five books, which are revoked or interpreted by the extravagant laws) (8 leaves), with its own title page and independent pagination, which is sometimes found together and can be considered an autonomous type of typography (see BN, 404). Complete copy, with some imperfections, namely: water stain (from the tide) in the upper left half of the entire volume; serious defect, with crude restoration, affecting the upper outer corner of the last 11 leaves, to the detriment of some lines of text, reconstructed by hand. 20th-century binding, full natural sheepskin, with blind decoration on the spine. First Portuguese translation of the “Manual de confessores” by the Spanish humanist Martim de Azpilcueta (1492-1586), a professor in Coimbra between 1538 and 1554, this being his most popular text with more than 25 editions during the 16th century. The copy is slightly trimmed, mainly at the head, with some imperfections, namely: the first signature has fungal stains on the outer margin, weakening the support, and the lower margin has been reconstructed; rough marginal restorations on the last four leaves, which also show some moister stains; an old inscription on the upper margin of the title page (topographical note). Stamp of the Azevedo House on the verso of the last preliminary leaf (lot no. 2536 of the auction catalogue held in 1921/22). 19th-century binding, full sheepskin, with painted patina, missing the first free endpaper. Anselmo, 296 (information extracted from Monteverde, 4251). This edition is not mentioned in the main catalogues and collections consulted, namely the National Library of Portugal (BNP) and the Biblioteca de D. Manuel II.
