Agostinho José Freire (1780-1836), an army officer, minister, and State Councilor, born in Évora; he was a Freemason and defender of the liberal cause, distinguishing himself during the Peninsular War, and was assassinated during the Belenzada on November 4, 1836. This collection consists of 27 handwritten letters (and one note) addressed to the Duke of Terceira (1792-1860), dealing with political matters, written on bifolios (2 to 4 pages each), almost all dated only with the day and month. However, one of the letters is dated January 29, 1834, which makes it acceptable to date the others between January 13 and July 25 of the same year.
