MANUSCRITO.- ANDRADE, Bernardim Freire de (Tenente-General).- Cópia do processo.- Século XIX (1809-1810).- 1 vol. (cerca de 800 p.); 31 cm.- E.
Bernardim Freire de Andrade (1759-1809), general officer of the Portuguese Army, born in Lisbon, assassinated during the Peninsular War. Authentic copy, at the request of José Gomes Freire de Andrade (Principal Freire who would become president of the Provisional Board), taken from the War Council process in which his brother, lieutenant general Bernardim Freire de Andrade, was sentenced and rehabilitated “atroz e barbaramente assassinado no dia 17 de Março de 1809, para ser prezentada a Vª. A. R. [o Príncipe Regente], cujo Regio conceito importa tanto à memória do defunto general e à honra da consternada família e outro sim outra cópia igual para ser guardada no Cartório da sua caza”. The request was the subject of an order dated January 28, 1810. The sentence determined that the lieutenant general's military conduct was not only irreproachable, but worthy of much praise. Volume with more than 800 pages, probably written in one hand. At the end, a closing statement dated from the State Secretariat for Foreign Affairs and War, March 12, 1810. Autograph signature: Gregório Gomes da Silva. Document with very slight browning, fully legible. A modest contemporary binding, with a sheepskin spine, without any label, with traces of wormholes.

Edition of excellent graphic quality, dedicated to King D. João VI, illustrated with two portraits (of the author and the translator) and four copperplate prints, one at the beginning of each of the four epistles that make up the poem. Francisco Bento (1756-1827), 2nd baron and only viscount of S. Lourenço, was born in Lisbon, son of an Italian father; a staunch supporter of absolute power, he arrived in Brazil in 1783; in 1821 he accompanied the royal family on the return trip to Portugal, having not been allowed to disembark, so he went into exile in Paris, where he lived until the end of his days. The collection of the three volumes is as follows: I - XXIV, 380 p.: 2 portraits; 2 engravings; II - [4], 232 p.: 1 engraving; III - [4], 331, [1 br.] p.: 1 engraving. The engravings are the same as those used for the English edition, with the same date. Engravings with slight browning; clean text. Provenance: ex-libris of the Livraria de J. G. Maziotti Salema Garção (lot nº 2307 of the 1st auction catalogue, in November 1980). Bindings of the time, entirely made of purple velvet, featuring the coat of arms of Portugal in the center of both covers (on an armillary sphere), gold engraved and top edges gilt; new endpapers in marbled paper; volume II with a slightly discoloured front cover. Inocêncio, II, p. 352.
