William Combe (1742-1823), English writer and adventurer, contemporary of William Beckford, published this work at the age of 79. Original edition, published without the author's name, illustrated with a vignette on the title page and 27 aquatints, coloured by hand, with great freshness, portraying with some ingenuity and humor, Madeiran habits and customs. Very clean copy, only cropped at the top (gilt edge), with occasional creases on the upper margin of some pages, probably originating before printing. Contemporary binding (original?), in tobacco canvas, with blind engraving on the covers and gold on the spine, as published. Tooley, nº 150. Duarte de Sousa, II, 348.
