CASAL, Frei Gaspar do, O.E.S.A.- Axiomata Christiana | Ex diuinis scripturis, & sanctis patribus, cum ec- | clessiasticis, tum etiam Scholasticis, per Reuerendu[m] | Patrem fratrem Gasparem, ordinis eremitaru[m] sancti | Augustini, Doctore[m] Theologu[m], ac Regiu[m] concionato | re[m] indignu[m], Nunc nu[n]c nouiter collecta, opus hactenus | desideratu[m] aduersus hæreticus, antiquos, & modernos. | [gravura xilografica].- Conimbricæ: Apud Ioannem Barrerium, & Ioannem Aluarum Typographos Regios. M. D. L. [1550].- [10], 196 f.; 20 cm.- E. Collection of Latin biblical quotations, by the Scalabitan theologian Friar Gaspar do Casal (1510-1584), a prominent figure in the Portuguese Church of the 1500s; Friar Gaspar was successively bishop of Funchal (1551-1556), Leiria (1557-1579) and Coimbra (1579-1584), having participated in the 3rd session of the Council of Trent (1562-1563), alongside D. Friar Bartholomew of the Martyrs. A well-maintained, washed, reglued and carefully restored copy, with extensive restorations on the lower margin of all pages, including the title page, which, however, never affect the printed text. In the known copies, the preliminary and final sheets have the following structure: title page with the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Portugal, on the verso, armillary sphere (f. 1); dedication to King João III of Portugal (f. 2r to 4r); Christiano Lectori. S. (f. 4v to 6r); Ad lectorem (f. 6v); Index aperit argument[n]ta (4 leaves at the end of the text). In the present copy, some preliminary and final pages are poorly bound, namely: leaf [6] is bound next to the title page; and the 4 leaves that should be at the end of the volume are found before the beginning of the text. The copy is, however, complete. Old ownership on the title page. Recent binding, full parchment, with ties. BN (16th century), 145. Library of King D. Manuel II of Portugal, 100.
