DEAR FRIENDS,

It is with great pleasure that we present to you the catalog of our auction 149.

A special auction, covering, as usual, a large number of items of special quality, rarity and antiquity.

This is the case of the remarkable set of books from the Library of the eminent bibliophile and reputed horseman that was Dom Diogo de Bragança, 8th Marquis of Marialva (1930-1912).

Divided into several areas - Travel and Customs of Portugal and Spain (18th and 19th century); Nineteenth Century editions; Incunabula; Sixteen Century Typography; History (16th to 18th Century) – the set (lots 318 to 352) includes books as rare as "Os Lusiadas" by Luis de Camões, so called Piscos edition (lot .345) the " Crónica do Príncipe D. João”, de Damião de Góis (lot 343), the “Espingarda Perfeita”, de João e José Rodrigues (lot 352), “La Fauconnerie” de F. Ian des Franchieres (lot 344), etc.

In the ceremonial silver field should be highlighted the Salver that illustrates the cover: a gilt silver work of art, late Gothic, Portuguese, 15th/16th C., with Oporto assay mark, IF judge of the silver or makers mark and other unreadable mark (lot 237).

Reference also to the sixteenth century Portuguese painting dedicated to “Saint Roch” and attributed to the Master of the “Retábulo de São Cristóvão” (act. 1540-1560) (lot 118).

Several other exceptional pieces, of national and international quality and interest are, for example:

The tapestry “The Triumph of Fame”, Franco-Flemish, 16th/17th C. (lot 490);

The triple top game table – tea and cards – George III (1760-1820) in mahogany with carvings (lot 454) and the portrait of the Princess Augusta Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, Princess of Wales (1719-1772), signed G. KNAPTON (lot 625);

The tankard with cover in sculpted ivory, Germany, 19th C. (lot 507)

A further reference to the recent award of the Prémio José de Figueiredo / 2013 to the work “15th and 16th CENTURY PORTUGUESE CEREMONIAL SILVER”, by Nuno Vassalo e Silva, edited by SCRIBE.

A distinction with which the Academia Nacional de Belas Artes distinguishes the best books edited in Portugal on art and heritage and that (after the edition of “José Malhoa – Tradição e Modernidade”, by Nuno Saldanha - Prémio José de Figueiredo /2011) is by the second time attributed to a book published by SCRIBE, with what we rightfully congratulate ourselves.

Hopping to have the pleasure of receiving you soon, yours sincerely

Pedro Maria de Alvim                                     Miguel Cabral de Moncada
