Main work of the author, a physician trained in Edinburgh, having practiced in London from 1782 where he held from his pocket a botanical garden in King's Cross. It was also a researcher and pioneer in the field of variola inoculation. The set, complete in the second edition (the first dates from 1790-93), just short of the print 51 (Pimpinella Saxifraga) in the first volume includes 274 (actually 273) the intaglio prints, hand colored, authored by James Sowerby (1757-1822). In Vol. II print 112 does not exist (apparently was not print and there is no failure in the text). Seal "C. Thornley / Stow on the Wold - Chemist" in the two cover sheets (Vols. I and III). Occasional minor bookworm holes on the top edge of Volume I and sometimes slight acidity. The engravings are shown in general, very clean. Binding of the period, entire calf, slightly tired, with elaborate gilt and dry decoration to the plans, houses gilt closed on the spines and gilt cut sheets. Nissen, 2183. Pritzel, 10398.
