D. FERNANDO II - 1816-1885 D. FERNANDO II King of Portugal - 1816-1885, Album of engravings, Essais de gravure a l'eau forte / par FC. a Lisbonne.- [Lisbonne]: s.n., 1855-[1856].- 105 engravings in 82 f.; 52 cm.- B., Álbum constituted by 104 etchings and one aquatint, opne on copper between 1836 and 1856, by D. Fernando, that in the majority of the cases was also the drawings authors. With the exception of three (47, 61 e 72), all proofs are signed and dated on the plate and almost all should have been printed by the brothers Édouard and Eugène Brohy that used the chine-collée technic on large sheets. The volume opens with a print that we may call frontispiece, representing a cat holding a sheet where we can read the title (Ernesto Soares, 114), followed by the others who apparently do not follow any chronological or thematic order. Some sheets present two proofs, printed with distinct plates. Volume covered with rich full morocco binding of the period, with geometric decoration intertwined with gilt and dry and gilt head bands; gilt doublure and decoration, and guards in silk moirée. Features a large label from the workshop D. Miguel Ginesta (bookbinder of the Royal House of Spain, active between 1849-1878) and ex-libris of the Royal Library of S. A. R. el Ser. Sen. Infante Duke of Montpensier (Antoine Marie d'Orléans [1824-1890], infante of Spain). Light handling and occasional mild acidity peaks. We are aware of the existence and location of only four similar albums, but differing in the number and ordering of prints, one of the BNL (quota EA 87 A), another in the Landesbibliothek Coburg, the birthplace of D. Fernando, Germany (GR share 53 F) and two other in private collections in Portugal. All engravings have at the margin, in pencil, the identification of the inventory of Ernesto Soares, who in his work El-Rei D. Fernando II Artista (Lisbon, Fundação da Casa de Bragança, 1952), pp. 92 to 131,, gives us the most complete catalog raisonne of the engraved work of the king. Dimensões (altura x comprimento x largura) - 52 cm
