Santo Amaro (or Santo Amaro da Purificação), a Brazilian municipality in the State of Bahia, elevated to a town in 1727 and a city in 1837. A carefully calligraphed manuscript, with the following title: Compromisso e Estatutos da Santa Caza e Hospital da Natividade que novamente se erigio na Villa de Nossa Senhora da Purificação e Santo Amaro, aonde começou a ter exercicio no dia 8 de Setembro de 1778, em que se fez a primeira eleyção de Provedor, Escrivão, e mais Officiaes da Santa Caza... The volume opens with an elaborate rococo (rocaille) frontispiece, drawn in charcoal, with a large cartouche framing the word CHARITAS; followed by an index of the fourteen chapters and the title indicated above; the text of the commitment occupies the next 26 pages; Finally, a sheet with the transcription of a perpetual indulgence edict (by another hand) for all the faithful of the Hospital Chapel, dated January 12, 1780. Very clean document, with the frontispiece sheet detached. Ex-libris of the Bibliotheca de António Capucho. Contemporary binding, entirely green silk velvet, with gilt edges.
