DEAR FRIENDS,

It is with great pleasure that we present to you the catalogue for our Live Auction 241:

Antiques and Works of Art, Rare Books and Manuscripts, Modern and Contemporary Art
Fernando Pessoa Memorabilia – Documents, Autographs, and Pipe

In many respects, a special auction, featuring a single session that brings together a broad selection of pieces of exceptional quality, rarity, and antiquity, taking place on Monday, June 1st, at 6:00 PM.

Fernando Pessoa Memorabilia – Documents, Autographs, and Pipe - Lots 131 to 143

Among the various items that justify special attention in each category, it is essential to begin with an explicit reference to the Fernando Pessoa Memorabilia.

Of completely reliable provenance—it has never been on the market before and all its components were inherited—it was not only known to Pedro de Azevedo, a recognized specialist in Pessoa memorabilia, many years ago, but also thoroughly studied and expertized by him.

A diverse and remarkable set of documents, autographs, and even the very pipe that belonged to Fernando Pessoa and was taken from him one day... by someone who did not want him to smoke – Lot 143

A collection that is not only private but touchingly personal, of invaluable cultural significance, which belonged to the Poet's only known girlfriend: Ofélia Queiroz - Minha Ibis chamada Ophelia (My Ibis called Ophelia) - as he calls her in the published, undated autograph letter addressed to her ca. 1920 (paper bifolium, 37 lines; autograph signature: Fernando. First line: Pasma, ente pequeno e péssimo! [Marvel, small and terrible creature!]. Published in Cartas de amor de Fernando Pessoa, Lisbon, Ática, 1978, p. 169) – Lot 142

Preciously preserved to this day within the family of Ofélia Queiroz—a figure who remains to be fully discovered, who deserves to be known, and who will hopefully be unveiled in the near future by her grandniece, goddaughter, and legatee Maria da Graça Queiroz. The collection, largely unpublished, especially as a whole, sheds light on the human, personal, and romantic side of the Poet, his loves, his affections, and his friends. Among them was Carlos Queiroz, another poet waiting to be fully uncovered, nephew of Ofélia, who passed away prematurely, and to whom Fernando Pessoa offered and dedicated, with an embrace, 35 Sonnets.- Lisbon: Monteiro & Co., 1918 – Lot 137

Other Manuscripts – Lots 111 to 130
Including royal autographs (Cardinal King Henry, King Joseph I, King Philip III, King Peter, Duke of Braganza) and literary authors (Camilo Castelo Branco, António Nobre, Teixeira de Pascoaes, Mário de Sá Carneiro, José Régio).

Highlighting the copy of Arte da cavalaria, de gineta, e estardiota by Antonio Galvão de Andrade, Lisbon, 1678, as well as the complete copy of Manuel Carlos de Andrade - Luz da liberal e nobre arte de cavalaria, Lisbon, 1790 - respectively lots 109 and 110

PRIORITY BIDDING

Please note that the significant discount rewarding advance bids received for each lot – internationally known as priority bidding – is currently in effect: a 10% discount on the buyer's premium fee for absentee bids received and registered on the Cabral Moncada Leilões bidding platform www.cml.liveauctions.pt for a specific lot until 11:59 PM on the Friday preceding the Monday on which the in-person auctions take place, which in this case is May 29, 2026.

A few clarifications regarding this system:

a) it only applies to in-person auctions, not online auctions;
b) it applies to both traditional absentee bids received on a signed form and electronically received absentee bids, provided that, in both cases, they are registered on the Cabral Moncada Leilões bidding platform www.cml.liveauctions.pt, and among these, only to those received within the aforementioned deadline;
c) once an absentee bid has been received under these terms and within the established deadline – a priority bid – the planned 10% discount (excluding VAT) remains applicable and is due even in cases where the bidder subsequently wins the item at auction for a higher value than their initial priority bid.

In closing, a sad note of condolences for the premature passing of Nuno Saldanha – a friend and a reference in our cultural and academic life, who over the years collaborated with Cabral Moncada Leilões and SCRIBE in his areas of expertise, whose loss we deeply regret and to whose memory we pay tribute, extending our heartfelt condolences to his Wife and Family.

Hoping to have the pleasure of welcoming you soon, in person or virtually, with our best regards,

Pedro Maria de Alvim                  Miguel Cabral de Moncada
