Tommaso de Vio, known as Cardinal Caetano (1469-1534), Dominican religious, Italian exegete, philosopher and theologian, born in Gaeta (Lazio); vicar general of his Order, he was named cardinal in 1517, having participated in the excumbation process of Martin Luther. Lyon edition of one of his most important works, originally published in 1525. The second group of 101 pages contains another work by the same author, with its own title page (Ientaculorum novi testamenti), but apparently it is a single typographic unit. First title page, a little dusty, printed in black and red, with an old manuscript: Dos Carmelitas descalços do Porto. Otherwise, a slightly cropped, but vey clean specimen. Contemporary full sheepskin binding, or a little later, with gold florets between the sections.

Manuel da Costa (c.1510-1562), Portuguese poet, humanist and jurisconsult, born in Lisbon; He was a student of Jerónimo Cardoso and Martim de Azpilcueta Navarro, in Coimbra, where he later taught, as well as in Salamanca where he became famous. Two legal works together in the same volume, the second being rare. Slightly cropped volume and slight browning, but overall clean. Recent binding, full sheepskin, from the workshop of Mestre Império Graça, with blind decoration on the covers; Spine with signs of degradation and wormholes. Anselmo, 262 and 288. Pedro Afonso de Vasconcelos (fl. 16th century), a native of Leiria, graduated in Canon Law from the University of Coimbra, was a relative of the household of D. Teotónio of Braganza and Archbishop of Évora. The copy is slightly handled and trimmed, with browning and signs of wormholes (marginal), which have been restored; the title page is dusty, with a stain on the inner margin. An old ownership appears on the title page: Carmelitas descalços de Corpus X[Chris]ti. Lisboa. The binding is from the 20th century, entirely sheepskin, with traces of wormholes. Anselmo, 892. Commentary on the Epistle of St. Paul to the Romans, written by Fr. Gonzalo de Lacerda (fl. 1580) who, in addition to being a member of the Military Order of Alcântara, was chaplain to King Philip II of Spain. Copy slightly cropped, but clean; title page with small restorations in the two outer corners; on the front of the second sheet (permit), the inscription: visto pello expurtagorio. 20th century binding, full sheepskin, from the workshops of Mestre Império Graça. The Dominican Fr. Diogo do Rosário, born in Évora, was prior in the convent of Guimarães, the city where he died in 1580. Fr. Diogo Diogo had a close relationship with D. Fr. Bartolomeu dos Mártires who commissioned him to publish a new legendarium (Braga, 1567) which was reprinted several times, as well as the translation of the “Summa Caietana”, by the Dominican exegete, theologian and Italian cardinal Tommaso de Vio (1469-1534). In fact, at least six Portuguese editions of the Rosarian translation of the “Summa” are known (Lisbon, 1557, 1560; Coimbra, 1566 and 1573; Braga, 1565 and 1566), the present one being probably one of the rarest, since there is no copy in the National Library or in the Biblioteca de D. Manuel II. Copy slightly cropped, with some restorations on the title page, slightly affecting the text on front and verso; Minor restorations on subsequent leaves. Binding from the 20th century (probably from the workshop of Mestre Império Graça), with blind tooling on the covers and spine. Anselm, 863.

This monumental work can be considered a general history of the Kingdom, given the wide variety of information it contains. The Proofs section is also undeniably interesting, as it notably transcribes some documents that have since disappeared. The copy corresponds exactly to the description given by Inocêncio, namely: the first 12 volumes of the History are bound in 13; followed by the six volumes of Proofs and the volume of Index. The first volume includes a portrait of the author. The fourth volume contains engravings of royal seals, medals, and coins minted in Portugal since the beginning of the monarchy. None of the volumes includes the usual engraved frontispiece characteristic of the Academy. An old ownership mark (monogram) is present on all volumes. The copy is very clean, preserving large margins. The contemporary bindings, full sheepskin, those of the first two volumes with blind decoration on the covers, the others without decoration, only with the original patina. Samodães, 3241. Fr. Jerónimo de Azambuja (†1563), also known as Oleastro, religious of the Order of Saint Dominic, of which he was provincial, was one of the most prominent theologians of the 16th century. Deep knowledge of the Latin and Greek languages, he participated in the Council of Trent where he was noted for his opposition to any type of innovation; as chief inquisitor (1555) he practiced the greatest violence and cruelty. Original edition of his main work, the “Comentários ao Pentateuco”, divided into five parts or books, the first printed by João Barreira and the rest by João Blávio de Colónia. The commentary on the second book of the Pentateuch was the first to be printed by João Blávio de Colónia (fl. 1554-1563), the last German printer to settle in Lisbon. Copy slightly trimmed (occasional damage to the printed marginalia), with slight moisture stains (from the tide), but overall clean. Full sheepskin binding, from the 20th century, certainly from the workshop of Mestre Império Graça, with blind decoration on the covers, in the style of the period (spine with slight wear).
