Anno Christo nato M. D. LIII. 1553.- [8], 564, [20] p.; 20 cm.- E. First Portuguese translation of the “Manual de confessores” by the Spanish humanist Martim de Azpilcueta (1492-1586), a professor in Coimbra between 1538 and 1554, this being his most popular text with more than 25 editions during the 16th century. The copy is slightly trimmed, mainly at the head, with some imperfections, namely: the first signature has fungal stains on the outer margin, weakening the support, and the lower margin has been reconstructed; rough marginal restorations on the last four leaves, which also show some moister stains; an old inscription on the upper margin of the title page (topographical note). Stamp of the Azevedo House on the verso of the last preliminary leaf (lot no. 2536 of the auction catalogue held in 1921/22). 19th-century binding, full sheepskin, with painted patina, missing the first free endpaper. Anselmo, 296 (information extracted from Monteverde, 4251). This edition is not mentioned in the main catalogues and collections consulted, namely the National Library of Portugal (BNP) and the Biblioteca de D. Manuel II.
