A set consisting of three documents addressed to D. Tomás de Almeida (1706-1786), also known as Principal Almeida, an illustrious prelate and politician, principal dean of the Patriarchal Church of Lisbon, nephew of D. Tomás Almeida (1670-1754), his namesake, the first Patriarch of Lisbon: two letters from Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, the first dated July 7, 1759 (autograph signature: Count of Oeyras), confirming the royal appointment (grace) to the position of Director General of Studies; the second, dated July 5, 1771 (autograph signature: Marquis of Pombal), requesting that all books and papers belonging to the Directorate General of Studies be delivered to the bishop presiding over the Royal Censorship Board. Enclosed is a royal charter from Queen D. Maria I, requesting the presence of Dom Tomás at the solemn ceremonies honoring his father, King Dom D. José I, to be held on the balcony of the Royal Commerce Square on May 13, 1777; document (paper bifolio) dated May 10, 1777 (autograph signature: Queen), with a serious fault in the support at the bottom margin, without affecting the main text, but with possible omission of the usual summary.
