Scripturæ dicta | cum Terrae mobilitate condiliantur.- Augustae Treboc. [Strasbourg]: Impensis Elzeviriorum, Typis Davidis Havtti, Anno 1635.- [16], 495, [24, 1 br.] p.: il., 1 frontispício grav., 1 retrato; 20 cm.- E. First Latin translation of the only major work by Galileo (1564-1642), published in Strasbourg, while the author was still alive, whose original edition, in Italian (Florence, 1632), would cause great controversy within the Catholic Church, which included it in the Index. Interestingly, the present Latin translation of his “Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems” is from after the famous trial (sentence handed down in 1633) that led Galileo to abjure his theories and to house arrest until the end of his days. Illustrated edition with a beautiful allegorical frontispiece and a copperplate portrait, both by the Flemish painter and engraver Jacob van der Heyden (1572-1636). It also includes 20 xilographic figures in the text, with astronomical and geometric diagrams; rare notes and occasional small marginal astronomical drawings. Working copy, although complete (preserves the final page with the errata), with generalized, strong or very strong browning, weakening the support; wormhole on the inside margin of the last 30 sheets, rarely affecting the printed part. Old ownership on the lower margin of the frontispiece: “De Leonis(?) de Pina Im(?). 1658”. Contemporary binding, entirely in very worn sheepskin and with almost no spine. Willems, 426 (“L’impression et le papier sont des plus mediumcres”). Dino Cinti, 96.
