João VI, illustrated with two portraits (of the author and the translator) and four copperplate prints, one at the beginning of each of the four epistles that make up the poem. Francisco Bento (1756-1827), 2nd baron and only viscount of S. Lourenço, was born in Lisbon, son of an Italian father; a staunch supporter of absolute power, he arrived in Brazil in 1783; in 1821 he accompanied the royal family on the return trip to Portugal, having not been allowed to disembark, so he went into exile in Paris, where he lived until the end of his days. The collection of the three volumes is as follows: I - XXIV, 380 p.: 2 portraits; 2 engravings; II - [4], 232 p.: 1 engraving; III - [4], 331, [1 br.] p.: 1 engraving. The engravings are the same as those used for the English edition, with the same date. Engravings with slight browning; clean text. Provenance: ex-libris of the Livraria de J. G. Maziotti Salema Garção (lot nº 2307 of the 1st auction catalogue, in November 1980). Bindings of the time, entirely made of purple velvet, featuring the coat of arms of Portugal in the center of both covers (on an armillary sphere), gold engraved and top edges gilt; new endpapers in marbled paper; volume II with a slightly discoloured front cover.
