Volume containing 23 proofs of the engravings in two states, that is, all the engravings from the edition that is usually called “Morgado de Mateus”, except the two portraits of the poet and the engraving of D. Manuel's dream (canto IV), which they are only found in their definitive state (making a total of 13 different engravings). Some engravings with foxing and stains. The volume, covered in a period morocco half-binding (with new endpapers and gilded edges), belonged to William Beckford's library (The Hamilton Palace Library: Beckford Collection) auctioned in London by Sotheby's in 1882 and it features, on the back cover, a label printed by the buyer, the well-known London bookseller Bernard Quaritch.
