Rare 16th century edition, in vernacular, of the Tridentine Catechism, whose translator was Fr. Cristóvão de Matos, as can be seen from the approval of the inquisitorial censor D. Frei Bartolomeu Ferreira, inserted in front of the third page. The text, completed in 1566, following a decision by the Council of Trent, was intended for the instruction of pastors and priests in general and not directly for the pastoral care of the faithful. The title page (with a xylography representing the coat of arms of D. Miguel de Castro, archbishop of Lisbon) and the two following pages, were composed in black and red. The copy, a little trimmed and with occasional minor marginal restorations, has pages A1 and A2 (the first two pages of the Prologue) bound after page A6, but is complete and solid.
