First edition of the popular book by Koster (ca. 1793-1820), an English farmer and explorer, born in Oporto, having lived most of his short life in Brazil. The work is illustrated with two copperplate printed maps of Pernambuco and eight hand-coloured aquatints representing traditional customs and some aspects of everyday life. It is still considered today as the best English description of the Brazilian Northeast before independence. The last sheet contains a publisher's catalogue. Light browning, but in general, a clean copy with good margins. Ex-libris of Rev. I.S. Spurgeon. Recent plain natural sheepskin half-binding.
