William Beattie (1793-1875), Scottish physician, traveller, writer and poet, best known for his travel books, mostly illustrated with engravings, according to originals by his friend William Henry Bartlett (1809-1854). The collation of the two volumes is as follows: I - [8], 188 p.: 1 engraved title, 57 engravings; II - [4], 152 p.: 1 engraved title, 49 engravings, 1 unfolding map. Copy with slight browning, as in most known copies. Bookplate of W. H. G. Bagshawe in two volumes. English manuscript ownership, dated 1838, in the upper margin of both title pages. Full sheepskin (contemporary?) bindings, with elaborate blind tooling and gilt decoration on the covers and spine, blind roll on the square and gilt on the thickness of the folders (weak joints).
