Second edition, the first being published in 1701, also in Paris, but containing only 71 engravings. Father Plumier (1646-1704), a minor religious born in Marseilles, distinguished himself above all as a botanist and naturalist traveller, being considered a specialist in the flora of the Antilles and fish in Martinique. Copy lightly handled, with slight tidal stain on the outer margin of about 30 leaves; small wormholeds (repaired) in the upper margin of pages 121 to 180 and in engravings XV to XLIV. Free LXV engraving, with a rectangle of paper glued to the centre, covering the inscription of period. Manuscript ownership to the lower margin of the title page: Fr. Antonio José Carneiro de Villafanha (18th/19th century). Contemporary binding, made fully from sheepskin, a little worn, retaining two pairs of original endpapers on marbled paper.
