We are pleased to present to you the catalogue of our auction 194, dedicated to Antiques, Modern and Contemporary Works of Art: a special auction to be held in two sessions covering an extended set of art pieces of particular quality, rarity and antiquity, including a wide range of Haute Décoration items.

SAINT JOHN THE EVANGELIST - oil on oak, dim. 50 x 32 cm, the frame possibly original, by Fray Carlos, Flemish painter living in Portugal, monk at the Espinheiro Convent, in Évora, since 1517, and deceased in 1540, in the de São Jerónimo do Mato Convent, near Alenquer, an work of art unknown until now, subject of a note by an art historian expert and museum curator, reproduced in this catalogue, illustrates the cover (lot 151).

Cross-culture

Several pieces illustrate in a particularly eloquent way the originality, aesthetics and cultural richness of the art pieces which were commissioned since the time of the Portuguese Discoveries from Africa to the Far- East – a crossover between Portuguese art and culture and the art and culture, beliefs, traditions, styles and craftsmanship of India, Ceylon, China or Japan, to name just a few countries with which we closely related to since the 16th century.

  • A Box with drawer, low-carved marblewood “Amphorae with flowers”, Indo-Portuguese, Cochim, 16th C., (2nd half) (Lot 724);
  • The Pietà surmounted by God the Father and flanked by Two Angels, carved ivory plaques, Cingalese-Portuguese, 17th C. (1st quarter) (lot 699);
  • A Small Bureau, Namban Art, black lacquer fully coated wood gilt decoration with mother-of-pearl inlays “Leaves and fruit”, Japanese, Momoyama period (1573-1615) (lot 726).

  • “The Good Samaritan” and “The Return of Jacob, Rachel and Leah to their homeland” – a pair of oils on canvas, Spanish School, attributable to Pedro de Orrente (1580-1645) or follower (lot 730);
  • “God The Eternal Father flanked by Cherubs” oil on wood, Italian school, 16th C. (lot 731).

Silver and Jewellery

  • The Ceremonial Sword of Admiral Gago Coutinho, 800/1000 gold pommel and guard, turned ivory grip, Portuguese, Lisbon mark (1938-1984), LEITÃO & IRMÃO makers' mark, 20th C. (lot 848);
  • A Covered Jug, 833/1000 silver, decoration en relief, engraving with initial “E” and count coronet - Countess of Edla, Portuguese, 19th C. (4th quarter) (lot 920);
  • A Cartier brooch “Birds perched on a branch”, 750/1000 gold and 850/1000 platinum, chiselled decoration set with emerald, ruby and 8 brilliant cut diamonds, French, 20th C. (lot 834).

Chinese Porcelain

  • A Pair of Large Vases, Chinese porcelain, Guangxu period (1875-1908) (lot 523);
  • A Pair of oil Lamps, polychrome cloisonné metal “Flower”, bronze mounts (lot 530).

Furniture

  • JEAN-HENRI RIESENER - 1734-1806, A pair of Louis XVI Corner Cabinets, mahogany and burr-mahogany veneered and lined oak, bronze applications, marble tops, one signed RIESENER - master in 1768 (lot 592);
  • A Renaissance revival Cabinet with stand, ebony veneered oak, ebony and ivory marquetry, European, possibly Italian, 19th C. (2nd half) – It belonged to the collection of King D. Fernando II of Portugal (lot 586);
  • A Biedermeier Dressing Table (Coiffeuse) with Bureau Drawer, «partridge eye» veneered, legs with metallic elements “Serpents”, mirror flanked by carved wooden “Eagles”, gilt bronze mounts (lot 595);
  • A D. João V, King of Portugal (1706-1750)/D. José I, King of Portugal (1750-1777) Bureau, Brazilian rosewood, gilt bronze mounts, interior with drawers and pigeonholes, central door with bone inlay “Cross of the Order of Christ”, Portuguese (Lot 169).

  • VERÍSSIMO ALVES PEREIRA - 19th C., An Universal Time Clock, wooden cylinder lined with engraving on paper “Mapa-Mundi”, Brazilian rosewood and metal stand, top with terracotta sculpture “Chronos” (the Time), Portuguese, 19th C. (2nd half) (lot 278);
  • A Large Napoléon III Table Clock, gilt and relief bronze case with beveled glasses, French, 19th C. (lot 127);
  • MANUEL AMADO - NASC. 1938, “Na praia” (“By the beach”), Manufactura de Portalegre tapestry, signed and dated 1989, copy 2/3, marked (lot 226).
