We are pleased to present to you the catalogue of our auction 176.

A two session special auction, covering an extended set of art pieces of particular quality, rarity and antiquity, whose cover is illustrated by a pair of Louis XVI style chiselled and gilt-bronze cartel clock and barometer, French, late 19th C. (lot 524).

A 16th C./17th C. Southeast Asian - Gulf of Bengal - oratory (lot 551) illustrates particularly well the originality, aesthetics and cultural richness of Lusíada Art: art pieces which were commissioned in the time of the Portuguese Discoveries from Africa to the Far East – a crossover between Portuguese art and culture and the art and culture, beliefs, traditions, styles and craftsmanship of India, Ceylon, China or Japan to name just a few countries with which we closely related to since the 16th C.

Portuguese painting: special highlight to a wide set of works of author, including significant paintings by Carlos Reis (lot 172), Alfredo Keil (lot 100), Carlos Botelho (lot 120), Maluda (lot 181), among others.

Other highlights:

  • Chinese porcelain: an 18th C. saucer tureen with stand (lot 210);
  • Faïence: a 17th C. (1st half) pot (lot 42);
  • Silverware: an 18th C. D. João V (King of Portugal) inkstand (lot 680);
  • Jewellery: a tourmaline ring and necklace (lots 664 and 661);
  • Portuguese and foreign furniture: an 18th C. pair of commodes D. José I (King of Portugal), in the French manner (lot 86);

Finally, a brief reference to the most recent publication of our partner SCRIBE: "17th and 18th C. LISBON PAINTERS - THE BROTHERHOOD OF ST.
