Dear Friends,
We are pleased to present to you the catalogue of our Auction 166, a special sale, covering a wide range of pieces of particular quality, rarity and antiquity.
Among many other Western Art pieces, the Louis XVI pair of Three-light silver Candlesticks by Robert-Joseph Auguste (1723-c. 1805) is noteworthy (lot 318).
The same is to be said about the significant set of Portuguese furniture, silverware and jewelry, as the D. José I Brazilian rosewood Side Table (lot 98), the platinum Ring set with a 6.65 ct. diamond (lot 242) and several other pieces of Haute Décoration, as the French Boulle style table clock, 19th C. (lot 513).
In the domain of Lusíada Art – commissioned art pieces of the time of the Portuguese Discoveries, from Africa to the Far East, a crossover between Portuguese art and culture and art and culture, beliefs, traditions, styles and craftsmanship of India (Indo-Portuguese Art) (lot 770), Ceylon (Singhalese-Portuguese Art) (lot 748), China (Chinese-Portuguese Art) or Japan (Namban Art) (lot 741), to name just a few countries with which we are closely related to since the 16th century – an extended set of pieces is presented, particularly in ivory, but also furniture, including several cabinets, drawers, chests, etc.
A particular reference is due to the Indo-Portuguese ivory sculpture of Our Lady of The Immaculate Conception, 17th/18th C. (lot 589); the armorial carved teak Cabinet with cover “à abattant” and central foot, Gulf of Bengal, 16th C.
