It is with great pleasure that we present to you the catalogue of our Auction 161.

A special sale, covering, as usual, a wide range of antiques and works of art of particular quality, rarity and antiquity.

From a variety of pieces that should be highlighted the Singhalese-Portuguese ivory box (lot 767) illustrating the cover cannot be overlooked. Accompanied by a specific study by expert Hugo Miguel Crespo, which states of its rarity and importance, the piece is an example at all levels of the Lusíada Art – commissioned art pieces in the time of the Portuguese Discoveries from Africa to the Far East a crossover between Portuguese art and culture and art and culture, beliefs, traditions, styles and craftsmanship of India (Indo-Portuguese Art) (v.g. lot 770), Ceylon (Singhalese-Portuguese Art) (v.g. lot 748), China (Chinese-Portuguese Art) or Japan (Namban Art) (v.g. lot 741) – to name just a few countries with which we closely related to since the 16th century.

Among other exceptional pieces of quality, national and international interest we draw your attention to:

Rest on the flight into Egypt”, oil on canvas, Spanish school, 17th C. (lot 314); José Malhoa - 1855-1933, “Affonso’s House”, oil on board, signed and dated Figueiró dos Vinhos, 1896 (lot 203); Almada Negreiros - 1893-1970, “Study for the frescoes of the Rocha do Conde de Óbidos harbour station”, tempera on paper, signed (lot 220). A Table Clock, tortoiseshell Boulle marquetary veneered, signed Balthasar Martinot à Paris, 17th/18th C. (Lot 650). A Cylindrical Bureau, Queen D. Maria I, Portuguese, Brazilian rosewood and other woods marquetary, signed Domingos Tenvta, Lisboa, 1791 (lot 137). Hadrian and Trajan Busts, marble sculptures and several other stones, Italian, 19th C. (lot 581).

A reference also to the various rare books (lot 242 to 245), as well as to the great set of furniturepieces (e.g. lot 253) and Chinese export porcelain (v.g. lot 593) that integrate the auction.

A final reference to the core of Portuguese and foreign silverware and jewelry which constitutes the last auction session. Among several other remarkable pieces, the following should be highlighted: a gold locket set with diamonds (lot 785), two pairs of diamond (lot 798) and emerald (lot 799) earrings.
