DEAR FRIENDS,
It is with great pleasure that we present to you the catalog of our auction 154. A special auction, covering, as usual, a large number of items of special quality, rarity and antiquity.
Of the various pieces that should be highlighted, it is unavoidable the Chinese export porcelain Coffee Pot that illustrates the cover (lot 448).
Among several other exceptional pieces, of national and international quality and interest to refer, we must emphasize, once again, the ones we generically call Arte Lusíada.
Portuguese command art pieces from the time of the Discoveries, from Africa to the Far East – the meeting and crossing of Portuguese Art and culture with art and culture, beliefs, traditions, styles and techniques of India (Indo-Portuguese art), Ceylon (Cingalo-Portuguese), China (Sino-Portuguese) or Japan (Namban Art) – to name only some of the countries with which we connect more closely since the 16th century.
Example of same of those cross-culture pieces: A Cabinet, Mughal influence branch (lot 644) and a significant ensemble of ivory sculptures.
The appropriate time and place to draw your attention to a remarkable book at any title, with the seal of SCRIBE, in bilingual edition: “Ivories in the Portuguese Empire” joint authorship of some of the world leading experts in this field as Gauvin Bailey, Jean Michel Massing and Nuno Vassallo e Silva, that make it, from the start, a work of reference.
Back to the catalog, it is significant the offer of furniture, of which is example the Spanish 18th century Credence (lot 475).
It should also be noted the romantic, naturalist and modern Portuguese painting, as Carlos Reis (lot 171), José Malhoa, Columbano, Tomasini, Sousa Pinto, Ernesto Condeixa, José Gyrão, Veloso Salgado, Falcão Trigoso, Dominguez Alvarez, Eduardo Viana, Dórdio Gomes, among others.
A reference, finally, to the core of silverware and jewelry, Portuguese and foreigner that, as usual, integrates the auction, and of which should be highlighted, among several other noteworthy pieces the silver Kettle, by João Coelho de Sampaio (lot 332).
Hoping to have the pleasure of receiving you soon, we wish you all Happy Christmas!
