A Tankard with cover, sculpted ivory, "the Battle of Constantine the Great against Licinius" decoration, engraved coat of arms at the bottom, German, 19th C. (2nd half), small defects Ivory tankard, probably made in the workshops of southern Germany, inspired by the ivory or precious metal models of the seventeenth century. A particularly interesting piece due to the iconography depicted the quality of the carving and originality of the handle with anthropomorphic motifs. The tankard's body depicts the battle of the Roman Emperor Constantine, the first Christian emperor, against Licinius. The emperor, identified by a laurel wreath, appears on horseback, in full battle, facing Licinius in turmoil of horsemen and foot soldiers armed with spears and daggers. The horse stands out by force of his anatomy and the dynamic and impulsive attitude. The author was based on a composition by Rubens, made in 1622 at the request of the king of France, Louis XIII, the Flemish painter who commands to the Flemish painter a set of 12 cards for a tapestry with the illustration of the life of the emperor Constantine the Great. These compositions will be a huge success, give rise to five sets of tapestries, and there are several engravers that, from the seventeenth century to the nineteenth century, will execute engravings after these models. To be noted that there are several engravings that represent the battle against Licinius as the battle against Maxentius, and are imprinted with that indication. In this tankard the composition thoroughly reproduces the engraved model, with the necessary adaptations to the cylindrical shape of the piece. The Rubens models were highly appreciated by ivory sculptors since the seventeenth century and the revivalist taste for this kind of objects kept the seventeenth century iconography. It is remarkable the dynamic that the sculptor managed to convey, in the realistic translation of the anatomy of horses and riders, in the proportion of the figures, in the balance and energy with which they interact with each other, as a narrative in motion it were. The handle, particularly interesting in the fusion of several anthropomorphic elements, depicts in the lower part a fish from whose mouth come a male human head which leads to a female figure, the main part of the handle. The cover, fully decorated with vegetal and geometric ornamental motifs, articulates with the body part through the head of a griffin. In the center of the cover stands a small male figure sculpture, represented standing, with long hair, dressed as a Roman soldier with a long robe and a scepter in his left hand. The tankards base consists of a frieze with vegetal motifs and central frown, respectively flanked by a lion and a bird. Note the skill of the ivory sculpture in the careful treatment of the details, in the gradation of perspectives ranging from high-relief, in the figures highlighted and in the foreground, to a slight relief, suggested in the background landscapes. We are facing a rare and high quality piece.
