ANTÓNIO VIEIRA - 1590-1642 (ATRIBUÍDO) ANTÓNIO VIEIRA - 1590-1642 (ATTRIBUTED), "Holy Family", oil on canvas, relined, restorations, Notes: attribution made by Professor Victor Serrão, who studied the author in his PhD thesis "The Proto-Baroque Painting in Portugal, 1612-1657", University of Coimbra, 1992. This painting is "very similar to the painting of the same subject that integrates the ... altar of São João de Tarouca, follows a mannerist engraving by Berwinchel, but sweetens the composition with the gracefulness of the costumes, the design of the carpet and details of the workshop of Joseph, which make painting a singular testimony of the religious painting of the Portuguese Counter-Reformation". Vd. Study on the artist in SERRÃO, Vitor - "António e Nicolau Vieira, dois pintores maneiristas de Lamego na diáspora ibero-americana", Actas do VII Colóquio Luso-Brasileiro de Arte, Oporto, pp. 219-227. Reproduced, as well as the engraving by Berwinchel, in "Josefa de Óbidos e o Tempo Barroco", catalog of the exhibition curated by Vitor SERRÃO, held at Galeria D. Luís do Palácio Nacional da Ajuda, Lisbon, 1991, p. 165, where it is still identified as by an unknown author. Cabral Moncada Leilões is grateful to Professor's Victor Serrão availability to provide this information and the permission for its disclosure.
