DEAR FRIENDS,

It is with great pleasure that we present to you the catalogue of our auction 141, with which we start the 2012/2013 antiques and works of art auction season.

A special auction, covering, as usual, large number goods of particular quality, rarity and antiquity.

Of the various pieces that are noteworthy, deserves explicit reference the collection of clocks (lots 234-242 and 472-475); the beauty, quality, and rarity of the German exemplar, dating from the seventeenth century, chosen to illustrate the cover, well reflects the variety and interest of that collection (lot 234).

Among several other exceptional pieces, of national and international quality and interest to be noted, it should be highlighted, once more, firstly, those that we generically designate as Art Lusíada.

Portuguese command pieces of art from the time of the Discoveries, from Africa to the Far East – encounter and crossing of Portuguese art and culture with the art and culture, beliefs, traditions,the styles and techniques of India (Indo-Portuguese art), Ceylon(cíngalo-Portuguese), China (Sino-Portuguese) and of Japan (Namban) - Just to name a few of the countries that more closely we connected with since the 16th century.

Some examples:

A Large Table with double stretchers, Lusíada, partly ebony veneered teak, Indo-Portuguese branch, 17th C. (Lot 433);

 “Moses parting the Red Sea” Lusíada, sculpted ivory plaque, Sino-Portuguese branch, 17th C. (1st half) (Lot 404);

And a significant offer of furniture, highlighted by several 18th C. Portuguese pieces, in Brazilian rosewood, of which is example "A set of seven chairs", D. José King of Portugal (1750-1777) King of Portugal, Brazilian rosewood (Lot 69).

An extended core-century of 19th/20th C.  Portuguese paintings covering, among others, pictures by Domingos Sequeira (Lot 133),
Silva Porto (Lots 143, 147 and 153), Carlos Reis (Lots 160 and 163), Marques de Oliveira (Lots 132 and 149) Sousa Pinto (Lots 145 and 152), Simão da Veiga (Lots 146 and 154), and Carlos Botelho (Lot 156). A reference, finally, to the core of silverware and jewellery, Portuguese and foreign that, as usual, integrates the auction.

Hoping to have the pleasure of receiving you soon, yours sincerely,

Pedro Maria de Alvim                            Miguel Cabral de Moncada
