DEAR FRIENDS,

It's with great pleasure that we present to you the catalog of our Auction 136.

A special auction, one which covers a wide range of goods with particular quality, rarity and antiquity.

That is, in every respect, the case of the "St. Sebastian" which illustrates the cover – certainly one of the works of highest artistic, historical and cultural value of this auction,by the leading Portuguese painter of the mid 16 century, Diogo de Contreiras. A high collection piece, the subject of particular attention of specialists, museum-worthy (Lot 131).

Among the many other exceptional pieces, of national and international interest that could be mentioned, it makes sense to highlight some of what we call generically by Arte Lusíada - Portuguese command art pieces of time of the Discoveries, from Africa to the Far East, exotic fusion and precursor, deep and unrepeatable, of the meeting and crossing of Portuguese Art and culture with art and culture, beliefs, traditions, styles and techniques of India (Indo-Portuguese art), Ceylon (Cíngalo-Portuguese), China (Sino-Portuguese) or Japan (Namban Art) – to name only some of the countries with which we connect more closely since the 16th century.

Clear sign of the growing affirmation, national and international, of Cabral Moncada Leilões auctions in this specific field of exotic antiques and works of art, and also the strength of this market, is not only the quantity but the quality of the pieces that we have been regularly presenting, that contributes to the fact that is now recurrent the placement in our auction of pieces of Arte Lusíada coming from outside of Portugal.
