The work, whose first edition dates from 1788, obtained huge success by the end of the 19th century. Based on his deep knowledge, the author, a remarkable numimatist and archaeologist, describes through his hero, the social organization, laws, Government, art, music, religion, philosophy and the Antiquities of Ancient Greece, thus having contributed largely to the spreading of classical Greek culture. The set retain the rare Atlas (dated 1789 but with a different binding) that lacks in most copies because of its greater format. The second edition Atlas presents thefolowing collation: XLII p.: IV maps, 27 engravings(22 pairs). The engravings, mostly maps and plants, are very fresh.
