PESSOANA - Fernando Pessoa's Last Pipe walnut head, bakelite mouthpiece European 20th C. signs of use metal ring Dimensões (altura x comprimento x largura) - 4 x 11 cm Notes: 1. Pipe accompanied by an autographed note from Ofélia Queiroz (undated, but prior to 1949), addressed to her nephew Carlos Queiroz, with the following information: “Carlos: I still have this letter and this very curious little portrait of Fernando, keep it. I also have the last pipe he smoked; if you're interested, let me know and I'll give it to you. If you're not interested, I don't know what to do with it. Kisses from Ofélia”. In the edition of “Cartas de amor” (Nova Ática, 2001, p. 31), we find a reference to the famous pipe: "I also have Fernando's pipe. He smoked a lot. Pipes and cigarettes. His fingertips were even yellow. I used to scold him a lot and, jokingly, say: "One day I'll take that pipe away." And I did. He found it very funny, as he did with everything I did or said, and he never asked for it back. I still have it." This situation takes place at the very beginning of their courtship (1919/1920), as the description of the little gifts that Fernando would bring her in the morning and hide in the drawers of Ofélia's desk, such as chocolates, notes, and other things, occurs in the Felix, Valladas & Freitas office where they met and worked in 1919 and 1920. Another belated reference that Ofélia makes to the same pipe is found in her letter dated 13/11/29, 10 years after Ofélia's prank of taking the pipe from him: "Do you like me? Did you find it funny that I still have the pipe with its last tobacco? Ibis is very conservative! Goodbye my beautiful love - car wheel - (as Ibis says) sends you a big kiss, always very much yours. Ophelia". 2. The photograph of the pipe is reproduced (with slight enlargement) on page 211 (fig. 292) of Maria José de Lancastre's work "Fernando Pessoa, uma fotobiografia", Lisbon, Imprensa Nacional-Casa da Moeda, 1981.
