MANUSCRITO MUSICAL.- [GRADUAL].- Commune Sanctor[um].- Século XVIII/XIX.- 1 vol. (292 p.), notação musical; 83 cm.- E.
Musical manuscript (choir book or plainchant) stamped on parchment. Large volume, containing 196 leaves, paginated from 1 to 292, with square musical notation in black, on a red tetragram (staff with 4 lines), clefs and script. It includes chants for the liturgy of the feasts of non-pontifical saints (Saints' Calendar or Common of Saints), intended for the periods of preparation for Easter (Septuagesima) and Easter itself. The title (on the verso of the first page) is framed by a large illuminated frame in shades of pink; the first initial on the following page (S) is also illuminated, with polychrome decoration (23x17 cm); all other initials are framed in stamped blue frames. At the end, it includes a song for the church's own feast day, under the invocation of Saint John of Capistrano, a 15th-century Franciscan friar, canonized in 1690 by Pope Alexander VIII. Judging by the script of the last staff, on the last page (back note), there should be missing pages at the end. Solid contemporary binding, full of sheepskin, with darkened patina and blind decoration on the covers and spine, featuring the following metal applications on each cover: four scalloped and pierced corners, four round flaps; two complete clasps, with leather loops (one clasp partially loose); in the centre of both covers, a large metal super-libros with the coat of arms of the Order of Saint Francis, surmounted by a royal crown. The document is generally well-preserved, although it shows some handling and stains, especially on the lower outer corner (from handling), as is common. The manuscript is undated, but considering the stylistic and technical aspects (stamps), it may have been produced at the end of the 18th century or in the early years of the following century. Of uncertain origin, the volume does not appear to be related to the production of musical manuscripts from Mafra, but rather to two choral books existing in the National Library, respectively with the reference numbers L.C. 344 and 345.
