Rare first edition of a work of great importance for the history of Sino-Christian relations, whose author (1629-1658), a Jesuit missionary, born in Santa Comba Dão, was rector of the College of Jesus in Beijing. According to Löwendahl (China illustrata nova), this is the first European publication to announce the new “Edict of Tolerance” towards Christianity, decreed by Emperor Kangxi (1662-1722), as a way of thanking the Jesuit missionaries for their contribution to the Chinese Imperial Court.
