MURPHY, James.- Plans, elevations, sections and views of the church of Batalha, in the province of Estremadura in Portugal, with the history and description by Fr. Luis de Sousa; with remarks. Monumental work, especially appreciated for its magnificent large-scale copperplate engravings (burin and etching), containing the architectural survey of the Batalha Monastery and some reconstructions. James Cavanah Murphy (1760-1814), Irish architect and traveler, born in Blackrock (Cork), was in Portugal during the years 1789 and 1790, in the service of William Burton Conyngham, with the mission of studying and designing the architecture of the Batalha Monastery. The work includes the following typeset texts: Preface (II p.); Introduction (p. 1 to 26); A history and description of the Royal Monastery of Batallha... / by Father Luis de Sousa ([2], p. 27 to 61, [1] p.); List of subscribers [2 p., at the end]. The 27 engravings include: an architectural title (page), the dedication to William Conyngham and 25 engravings, with the survey, four before the introduction, one after it and the rest at the end of the volume (two on double pages). Complete copy, according to the bibliography and the index of engravings, with slight handling and some foxing on the prints. Two engravings with restored outer margins: West elevation & Design for completing the mausoleum (this one with two stains. Provenance: Library of Júlio Firmino Judice Biker (1814-1899), with his stamp (JBiker) on the engraved dedication. 19th century binding, with crushed leather spine, with crumpled corners.
