ANDRADE, Manuel Carlos de.- Luz da liberal e nobre arte de cavallaria.- Lisboa: Na Regia Officina Typografica, 1790.- XXVI, 454, [1, 1 br.] p.: 93 gravuras [i. e. 90], 1 retrato; 35 cm.- E. A slightly worn copy, missing four engravings, of one of the most beautiful books printed in Portugal in the 17th century and, certainly, one of the most sought after. Inocêncio claims that some people intended to attribute the work to the 4th Marquis of Marialva, head equerry, but this has not been confirmed to this day. The 93 engravings that make up the edition (22 fold-outs) represent, above all, the horse's attitudes during training and are opened on copper plates by various engravers, especially Luís Fróis, but also Manuel Alegre, Luís Fernandez Piedra and others, based on originals by Joaquim Carneiro da Silva (Ernesto Soares, História, 1076). Print 76 (p. 390) has a curious subscription: Silva del. — H. Queverdo aqua forti and completed by J. J. Droüet 1792 (engravers not mentioned by E. Soares). The prince regent, future king D. João VI, is represented in engravings 21, 29, 53 and 59 (E. Soares and Ferreira Lima, Dictionary of Iconography, 1549 B). Allusive vignettes at the beginning of books I and VI. Copy with the following most significant faults and imperfections: missing engravings 2, 22 and 88; engraving 2 (double), sectioned and useless; portrait of the Prince Regent with slight stains; a wormhole in the upper margin of almost all the leaves; engraving 33 dusty and with small imperfections. The other engravings are generally clean and well folded. Bookplate by Maria Amélia Cruz. Full contemporary and worn sheepskin binding. Inocêncio, V, 386. Torrecilla, 25: [Edición] digna de las magníficas ediciones ilustradas del caballero Pluvinel y del duque de Newcastle.
