Manuel I from 1521, a position that would be confirmed by King D. João III, and which he held until his death in 1550. Trained in the workshop of Jorge Afonso, his father-in-law, he worked with other contemporary artists such as Francisco Henriques, Garcia Fernandes or Cristóvão de Figueiredo, with whom he was one of the main people responsible for the renewal and updating of the taste in Portuguese painting of his time.His workshop was responsible for the execution of some of the most important works that were carried out in Portugal in the first half of the 16th century, namely the altarpiece of Saint Benedict, initially made for the convent of Saint Francis in Lisbon; the altarpiece of Paradise or the set of panels he made for the Convent of Christ in Tomar and for the church of Saint John the Baptist in the same city.Two other paintings, "Resurrection of Lazarus" and "Ascension of Mary Magdalene into Heaven", are in the Olivenza Museum - see https://museodeolivenza.com/salas/otras/sala-de-arte-sacro/ accessed on 3-3-2025 at 11:55.
