MAGESTADE | a mandou escrever | POR IOÃO BAPTISTA LAVANHA | SEV CORONISTA MAYOR.- Madrid: Por Thomas Iunti, 1622.- [2], 78 f.: [16] gravuras; 32 cm.- E. João Batista Lavanha (1550-1624), Portuguese engineer, mathematician, cosmographer and cartographer, born in Lisbon; in 1618 he was appointed chief chronicler of the Kingdom. The work recounts the only trip to Portugal by King Philip II (III of Spain) which took place between May 9 and October 23, 1619, with a long stay in Lisbon that lasted more than three months. The edition is illustrated with 16 copperplate engravings, four of which are printed separately: an allegorical frontispiece, a large fold-out engraving at the end, representing the disembarkation of Philip II at Terreiro do Paço and two larger engravings (Lisbon Businessmen's Arch and Flemish Arch). Of the remaining 12, all full page, printed next to the text, 11 represent allegorical arches erected specifically for the royal visit by the guilds and representations that received the sovereign, respectively businessmen from Lisbon, Englishmen, officers of the flag of St. George, silversmiths, candle makers, Italians, painters, Flemish, goldsmiths and diamond cutters, coiners, tailors, family members of the Holy Office and Germans; the last represents the plan of the large room of the Palace, where the Cortes took place, from the 18th of July to the 29th of August. Copy a little cropped, with tangential damage to some of the lower margins of the engravings (more pronounced on the plan view); outer margins of the last 16 pages restored, without prejudice to the text; large mirrored fold-out engraving, with restoration on the outer margin, slightly affecting the engraved part. Two old ownerships: one on the inner margin of the frontispiece (damaged by the trim); another on the last page of text, after the colophon: He este livro do Ldo. D[oming?]os Esteves de vasconcellos Natural de Penamacor. Custoudez mil reis. 19th century binding, fully sheepskin, with slight wear. Inocêncio, III, p. 306. Samodães, 1717. Palau, 133207.
