Original edition of one of the most appreciated English books on Portugal. The Anglican reverend William M. Kinsey (1788-1851) visited Portugal during the year 1827, having traveled extensively along the coast to Minho. The work, illustrated with engravings from his originals, frequently cites other authors, namely Link, Costigan, Baillie and Murphy. Copy with the following internal structure: front cover, double engraving of Coimbra (frontispiece), title page, dedication to George Eden Baron Auckland, preface (V to XII), contents (XIII to XVII, with blank verso) directions for the arrangement of illustrations (with notes on the verso); double map of Portugal; text (p. 1 to 500), followed by 4 pages. numbered with four frames (II to V). The remaining intaglio engravings correspond exactly to the respective index, that is, four sheets engraved on the front and back (with two modinhas and a hymn); two coin engravings; 14 uncoloured prints; and nine hand-coloured aquatints at the end, representing traditional costumes. Very clean copy, just cropped to the top. Recent binding, fully tobacco shagreen with plant motifs on the covers, gold closed panels on the smooth spine, rolls on the squares and gilt top edge.
