ENGRAVING.- PIETER BRUEGHEL, THE OLD.- Gvla [Gluttony] Original copperplate engraving, by the Flemish engraver Pieter ven der Heyden (ca. 1530-ca.1585), accoding to an original by Pieter Brueghel the Elder (1525/1569), the most celebrated artist of Flemish and Brabantine Renaissance art. Engraving published by Hieronymus Cock (ca. 1517-1570), in Antwerp, around 1558, from the series "Seven deadly sins", representing gluttony in an allegorical and satirical way. Includes the following caption, in the lower margin: GVLA. Ebrietas est vitanda, inglvviesqve ciborvm and in the second line the Flemish verse Schout dronckenschap, en gulsichlÿck eten Want ouerdaet doet godt en hem seluen vergheten. With the following subscription: H. Cock. excud. cum gratia et priuilegium. 1558; signed in the matrix (at the bottom of a bowl): brueghel inventor.
