Saint Bonaventure (1221-1274), Italian scholastic theologian and philosopher, born in Bagnoregio (Lazio); in 1243 he entered the Franciscan Order, of which he was minister general, having studied and taught at the University of Paris. In 1482 he was canonized by Pope Sixtus IV and in 1588 he was declared a Doctor of the Church. The vernacular translation of his “Estimulo de Amor Divino”, a work of high spirituality, has been known in Portugal since the Middle Ages, although it has assumed different titles: Incêndio de amor, Fonte da vida, Regime da consciência, etc. The work is mentioned in the will of Ferdinand the Holy Prince, written in 1437, before his departure for Tangier. The text is composed entirely in Gothic rotunda characters. At the end it presents a colophon with the indication that it was finished on January 25th, 1550.
