Giovanni Botero (ca.1544-1617), Italian Jesuit, diplomat and intellectual, born in Bene Vagienna (Piedmont), in 1589 published his main work in Venice with the title “Della ragion di Stato”, in which he contrasts a Christian vision to Machiavelli's amoral political philosophy. His “Relationi universali”, also very popular, originally published between 1591 and 1598 and reprinted numerous times, contain descriptions of the main countries and regions of the four continents. Illustrated edition with four fold-out maps (double-page), copperplate engraved, representing the four continents: Europe, Asia, Africa and America. Copy slightly cropped and carefully washed; Cc3 sheet with tear restored, no lack of support; second loose map.
