First Latin edition of the work of the Jesuit missionary Cristóvão Ferreira, born in Torres Vedras, published without the name of the author, vice-provincial of the Japanese mission (1632-1633), which reports the persecutions of which the Christians were victims in Japan, between 1628 and 1630. The translation is the responsibility of Father Jean Bolland SJ (1596-1665). The vernacular editions were published in the same year, in Rome, Milan, Paris and Douai. The work is dedicated to Father Muzio Vitelleschi (1563-1645), the company's sixth superior general from 1615 to 1645. The author would also remain in the history of the missions for having committed apostasy (renouncing the Catholic religion and converting to Zen Buddhism) in following his capture and torture in 1633 during the Tokugawa shogunate, he then changed his name to Sawano Chuan. A little trimmed copy, with slight handling and slight acidity causing some yellowing of the paper (browning). Small storage quota (624) on the first fixed guard. Period binding, made entirely of flexible parchment, with a protective cover (chemise) and textile case covered with sheepskin (modern). Cordier (Japonica), 323-324. Sommervogel (III, 681/682.)
