Original edition, dedicated almost exclusively (496 p.) to the nouveaux essais sur l'entendement humain, text written between 1703 and 1705, in response to the work of John Locke "Essay concerning human understanding". The author postponed his publication when he was aware of Locke's death because he considered it unacceptable to attack the ideas of someone who could not defend himself.
