It was the very Emperor Justinian (482-565) who instructed three compilers to draw up the Institutes, a synthesis of the Digest, intended to be used as a school handbook and that it would achieve great diffusion. Rafael de Lemos de Afonseca or da Fonseca (*1634), born in Lisbon and Bachelor of Law from the University of Coimbra, published these comments to the Institutes with only 22 years of age.
