Second Edition (the first is from 1702) of a work entirely intaglio engraved, reproducing faithfully and to detail the column of Marcus Aurelius (121-180) erected in Piazza Colonna (between 176 and 192?), in Rome, to celebrate the victories of the Emperor on the Germanic tribes of the region North of the Danube. In 1589, the statue of Marcus Aurelius was replaced by St Paul which we can find today at the top of the column. The engravings were opened on copper plate according to the drawings of the artist, Roman historian and biographer Giovanni Pietro Bellori (1613-1696). The edition, printed on paper of high weight, was dedicated to Pope Clement XI, and consists of engraved face and dedication and 80 engravings (numbered I to III and 1 to 77).
