EDUARDO VIANA - 1881-1967 A Still-life oil on canvas signed and dated 1921 Dimensões (altura x comprimento x largura) - 106,5 x 85,5 cm Notes: it was part of the following exhibitions: "A retrospective exhibition of the work of the painter Eduardo Viana", Foz Palace, Lisbon, April 1968, reproduced in its catalogue. Lisbon: S.N.I., 1968, s/p, no.93; and "Eduardo Viana-1881-1967", Europalia 91-Musée des Beaux-Arts de Mons, 25 September to 6 December 1991/Serralves Foundation, Oporto, 5 March to 19 April 1992, reproduced in its catalogue. Oporto: Serralves Foundation, 1992, pp. 164-165, where Maria João Lello Ortigão Oliveira referred: "This still life of Viana continues the series of large formats that would culminate with the 'Nudes' and 'Landscapes ' of 1925. At a time when the subject doesn't seem to particularly occupy the painter, this work expresses a mixture of familiarity and strangeness: the identification with recurring objects (table, vase, etc.) does not cease to be subtly perverted by brutal strong shades (purples) whose density contrasts with the light decomposition game, given by the curtain and the shadow of the vase on the wall. Similarly, the material structure of blue and white jar and basket of yellow fruit is questioned by branches of leaves that trickle down of the vase in intentional "erasure". A unique situation in Viana, of coexistence of several types of pictorial resolution, is one of his most original works and perhaps more ignored."
