A Kettle, silver, relief decoration "Chinoiseries", Oporto assay mark (1758-1768), João Coelho Sampaio makers mark (1758-1768), Portuguese, latter fee Portuguese 18th Century silver kettles are scarce, João Coelho Sampaio was, also in this type of pieces, who produced the most elaborate examples that are known. Clearly of English influence in the vast literature published it is known only one kettle comparable to this kettle, in the famous collection of Pedro Costa and published in the work of Reynaldo dos Santos "Ourivesaria Portuguesa nas Coleções Particulares", p. 84, fig. 83, with the original stand. In the book by D. Gonçalo de Vasconcelos e Sousa "Pratas portuguesas em coleções particulares" is illustrated another kettle, this one with three scroll feet stand (pp. 122/123).The only exemplar chiseled with "Chinoiseries" known to us is in a private collection in Lisbon, with the original stand, not being known any other exemplar, by this or other author. If the English influence on the production of Portuguese kettles is indisputable, for exemplars chiseled with "chinoiseries" we have to refer to the kettle made by Paul Lamerie in 1746 and actually in the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute collection. Dimensões (altura x comprimento x largura) - 34 cm; Peso - 2410 grs.
